The optician slides the result back across the counter and says it’s “not enough.” If you just had a failed eye test for driver’s license renewal in Dubai, that moment feels bigger than it is.
Most fails come down to something fixable: an old prescription, glasses left in the car, one eye that needs a better lens. Below is the RTA vision standard by category, what to do next, and how common eye conditions fit in.
Quick answer
Failing the RTA eye test is usually a fixable setback. Find out which part fell short, get a full eye exam, update your glasses or lenses, then test again at an approved centre. RTA publishes no fail procedure or waiting period, so ask the centre. Colour blindness alone does not stop you from applying.

What Does It Mean If You Fail the RTA Eye Test?
A fail means your vision on the day did not meet the RTA standard for your license category. It is a result, not a ban.
Your license is not cancelled. It just can’t be renewed or issued until a pass reaches RTA, which happens electronically. So the real question is which part fell short: sharpness in one eye, both eyes, or the colour section.
RTA Eye Test Requirements by License Category
RTA’s minimum vision is not one number. It depends on the vehicle, and for cars it allows several combinations of the two eyes. These figures come from the RTA eye test service page, updated 28 October 2026.
| License category | Accepted vision (eye 1 + eye 2) |
| Light vehicle and motorcycle | 6/18 + 6/18, or 6/12 + 6/24, or 6/9 + 6/36 or 6/60, or 6/6 + other eye blind |
| Heavy vehicle | 6/6 + 6/18, 6/12 or 6/9, or 6/9 + 6/9 (with or without spectacles) |
| Bus, tractor and equipment | 6/6 in both eyes |
Plenty of websites say the RTA minimum is “6/12” for everyone. For a light vehicle that’s simply wrong, since 6/18 in each eye passes. Professional categories are the strict ones.
The test in numbers
For booking and documents, see our guide to the eye test for driving license in Dubai. The basics, as of November 2026:
| Item | Value |
| Fee | AED 140 to 180 |
| Validity of a pass | 3 years |
| Time in the chair | 5 to 10 minutes |
| Centres | 434, accredited by DHA and authorised by RTA |
Common Reasons People Fail the Eye Test
The usual causes are boring, which is good news. Check these before you assume anything serious:
- An old prescription. Glasses that felt fine three years ago may now leave one eye just under the line.
- Walking in without your glasses or contact lenses, or bringing your reading pair instead of your distance pair.
- One eye much weaker than the other, something you may not notice day to day.
- Tired or dry eyes after a night shift or a long flight.
- A medical eye condition that needs an ophthalmologist, not just new lenses.

What to Do After a Failed Eye Test for Driver’s License in Dubai
Find out exactly what fell short, then fix that one thing. Here’s the order that saves the most time:
- Ask the centre which part you failed (left eye, right eye, both, or the colour plates) and write it down.
- Book a full eye exam with an optometrist or ophthalmologist, not a quick screening.
- If the prescription changed, get new glasses or contact lenses before you go back.
- Retest at one of the RTA approved eye test centres.
- Once the pass shows on your RTA file, renew your Dubai driving license as usual.

Can you retest the same day?
RTA does not publish a waiting period or a separate retest fee after a fail, so don’t plan around a quick second try. Ask the eye test centre before you leave, or call RTA on 800 9090.
When an eye doctor’s report helps
If the problem is a condition rather than a prescription, a letter from your eye doctor makes things clearer. The DHA “Fitness to Drive” medical form, for example, asks about:
- visual acuity of at least 6/9 in the better eye and 6/12 in the other
- whether corrective lenses are needed
- any visual field defect, and double vision (diplopia)
- any other eye condition, with hospital letters where relevant
Eye Conditions and a UAE Driving License
RTA’s public rules cover sharpness and colour vision, with no separate list for specific conditions. How a regular driver gets referred to DHA isn’t published either, so an eye doctor comes first. This is general information, not medical advice.
| Condition | What RTA publishes | What to do |
| Colour blindness | You can still apply if you pass the eye test | Ask the centre how the colour section is assessed |
| One eye | 6/6 + other eye blind accepted for cars and motorcycles | Confirm your case with the centre or RTA |
| Night blindness, cataract, LASIK, keratoconus, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy | No condition-specific rule | See an eye doctor and ask for a written report |
Colour blind driving license in the UAE
RTA’s new license page is clear: “If you’re colour blind, you can still apply for a Learning Permit provided that you pass the eye test.” An Al Ain study (All Life journal, December 2024) found colour vision deficiency in 3.13% of 3,486 applicants. RTA doesn’t say what “pass” means if you miss the Ishihara plates, so ask the centre.
Can you drive with one eye in the UAE?
Yes, for a car or motorcycle. RTA accepts 6/6 in one eye with the other eye blind, although forums often call this “difficult.” Heavy vehicles, buses and equipment need vision in both eyes. RTA’s wording names the right eye, and it doesn’t say whether left-eye-only vision is treated the same, so check with the centre or RTA before you book.
Night blindness
There is no separate RTA night vision rule, and the standard test checks sharpness in normal light. If headlight glare on Sheikh Zayed Road bothers you more each year, or dark streets feel harder to read, tell an eye doctor and ask directly what it means for driving after sunset.
Cataract and cataract surgery
A cataract can slowly pull your sharpness below the line, and a fail is sometimes how people find out. There’s no cataract-specific RTA rule; what counts is the acuity table on test day. Your ophthalmologist decides on treatment and when your vision is stable enough to retest.
LASIK or PRK before the eye test
RTA publishes no recovery period after laser surgery. Wait until your surgeon confirms your vision has settled, then book the test. If you now pass without glasses, the condition on your license can be changed (more on that below).
Keratoconus, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy
These can affect sharpness, side vision or both, which is why the DHA form asks about field defects. RTA has no separate rule for them, so don’t assume a pass or a fail. Keep your specialist check-ups current and ask for a written report you can show if needed.
Driving License Eye Test With Glasses or Contact Lenses
You can wear glasses or contact lenses for the test, and RTA treats them the same. If you need correction to pass, your license carries a “with or without glasses” condition.
Test in whatever you actually drive in. If laser surgery or better eyes mean you no longer need correction, RTA lets you change that condition through its service to amend driving license data.
What Happens to Your Renewal If You Fail
Your license stays unrenewed until a valid result reaches RTA. Failing doesn’t change the expiry date, though, so the calendar is the real risk: if you fail the eye test a week before expiry, new lenses plus a retest can push you past it. If that happens, ask RTA whether a late renewal fine applies.
Travel plans can suffer too. An international driving license in Dubai is issued against a valid UAE license, so an expired card blocks that as well.
Can RTA refuse to renew for a medical reason?
Yes. Under Federal Decree-Law 14 of 2024, Article 12, the licensing authority may suspend, cancel or refuse to renew a license if the holder is not medically fit. An outdated prescription is a different story, but for a serious condition, this is why the doctor’s letter matters.
Eye Test Myths Worth Ignoring
Much of the panic online comes from old or foreign advice. Here is how the common claims compare with RTA’s published rules:
| What you read online | What RTA says |
| 6/12 is the minimum | Cars accept several combinations, down to 6/18 in each eye |
| The eye test is valid for 30 days or 1 year | 3 years |
| Colour blind means an automatic fail | You can still apply if you pass the eye test |
| You must read a number plate at 20 metres | That rule comes from the UK standard |
| You need a 120 degree visual field | Not a published RTA rule |
New UAE Medical Fitness Rules From 2027
From 1 January 2027, Cabinet Decision 174 of 2026 requires drivers to be physically, visually and mentally fit, with a report from an approved health authority, as reported by Gulf News on 4 November 2026. Health authorities will also share information about new medical conditions with licensing authorities.
The official text wasn’t public when we wrote this, so treat any vision numbers quoted online for 2027 with care. If you have a known eye condition, it makes sense to get your doctor’s paperwork in order before January.
Our Advice: Retest Before Expiry
A failed eye test for driver’s license renewal is usually a short delay, not the end of driving. Get the eye exam done that same week, sort out your lenses, and leave room for a second visit. FAQ
What happens if I fail the eye test for my driving license in Dubai?
Your license can’t be renewed or issued until you pass, but nothing is cancelled. Find out which part fell short, get a full eye exam and the right lenses, then retest at an approved centre.
Can I retake the RTA eye test straight away?
RTA does not publish a waiting period or retest fee after a fail. Ask the eye test centre or call RTA on 800 9090. If old glasses caused the fail, get the new prescription first, or the result may be the same.
Is a failed eye test for driver’s license in the UAE permanent?
No. A fail only reflects your vision on that day, and many causes, like an old prescription or forgotten glasses, are easy to fix. For a medical condition, see an ophthalmologist before you retest.
Can a colour blind person get a driving license in the UAE?
Yes. RTA says colour blind applicants can still apply for a Learning Permit provided they pass the eye test. Ask the centre how they assess the colour plates in your case.
Can I wear contact lenses for the RTA eye test?
Yes. RTA makes no difference between glasses and contact lenses, so wear whatever you normally drive with. Your license will then carry the “with or without glasses” condition.
How can I remove the glasses condition from my Dubai driving license?
RTA has a separate service to amend driving license data, including the “with or without glasses” condition. It’s mainly useful after laser surgery, or if you now pass without correction.
